Diagnosis of TMD

Gnathology - Diagnosis of TMD

A thoroughly diagnosis is irreplaceable.

The separate steps that are taken to reach a diagnosis have already been discussed in details in the section for diagnosis. In addition to that, a comprehensive initial history needs to be taken when TMD is suspected, as these patients often have a long history of pain. Attention should be paid to events in the past, such as accidents or relevant dental treatments. At this appointment the dentist should explain to the patient the functional principles of this disorder in simplified language, because the better the patient understands the disorder, the easier it is to be treated. At the least the patient’s fears should be taken. In addition to that the psycho-emotional component of the disorder should be addressed. If necessary the practitioner should give some advice to help the patient coping with his problems.
